Skype can be a very powerful tool in the early elementary classroom. I use Skype often with my bilingual students and have found that it has made a positive impact on their social, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Two years ago I started creating interactive collaborative projects with Skype to encourage my students to collaborate and communicate in English through a comfortable, non-threatening and fun format. I began by Skyping with one class across the hall (Mrs. DiNicola, my partner in all our crazy adventures) and by the end of the year 7 classes in my building were taking part in the collaborative projects and skyping each other. By the end of year two we became a group of 17 Skyping classes both inside and outside of my district.

We are now in our third year and am happy to report that our Skype contact list is growing and growing. This year I hope to make connections with more classes all over the the United States and would love to Skype with students in another country.
